The Temple - One of Lifes Greatest Blessings

Todays lesson was taken from The Teachings of President Ezra Taft Benson, Chapter 13: Priceless Blessings of the House of the Lord.

President Benson shared his early memories of the importance of the temple is his own home as he spoke of his mother:

"I can still see her in my mind's eye bending over the ironing board with newspapers on the floor, ironing long strips of white cloth, with beads of perspiration on her forehead. When I asked her what she was doing, she said, 'These are temple robes my son.  Your father and I are going to the temple.'

"Then she put the old flat iron on the stove, drew a chair close to mine and told me about temple work - how important it is to be able to go to the temple and participate in the sacred ordinances performed there.  She also expressed her fervent hope that some day her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would have the opportunity to enjoy those priceless blessings."

The Temple is the nearest place to heaven on mortal earth - how much do we allow that to permeate our daily lives?  This beautiful video was shared with us last year at the General Sisters Meeting - do we feel this way ourselves?

"The things that endure, the things that are real, the things that are important are those things represented in the Temple of God."

"Go to the temple - our Father's House - to receive the blessings of your fathers that you may be entitled to the highest blessings of the priesthood...For without this no man can see the face of God, even the Father, and live (D&C 84:22)"

President Benson shared many of the wonderful blessings of the temple:
BUT the temple is far more a priceless blessing to our immediate families - "These...ordinances apply to both the living and the dead.  If we fail to be sealed to our progenitors and our posterity, the purpose of this earth, man's exaltation, will be utterly wasted so far as we are concerned."

"When I think of genealogy, I see people - people who I love who are waiting for our family, their posterity, to help them gain exaltation in the celestial kingdom....How many thousands of our kindred yet await these sealing ordinances?"

"It is well to ask: Have I done all I can as an individual on this side of the veil?"

"I promise you that with increased attendance in the temples of our God, you shall receive increased personal revelation to bless your life as you bless those who have died.

"In the peace of these lovely holy temples, sometimes we find solutions to the serious problems of life.  Under the influence of the Spirit, sometimes pure knowledge flows to us there.  Temples are places of personal revelation.  When I have been weighed down by a problem or a difficulty, I have gone to the House of the Lord with a prayer in my heart for answers.  These answers have come in clear and unmistakable ways."

"Let us make the temple a sacred home away from our eternal home."

Is it time you made a journey to your home?

Learning Self-Reliance the Practical Way!!!

Is the Holy Ghost a part of your life?

Today's lesson was taken from The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, Chapter 12: Seek the Spirit In All You Do which you can read HERE.

One piece of counsel that President Benson gave on a regular basis was this:

"In this work it is the Spirit that counts....the Lord is close to His servants, even within whispering distance."

Several years after Joseph Smith was martyred, he appeared to President Brigham Young with a very similar message..."Tell the people to be humble and faithful and be sure to keep the Spirit of the Lord and it will lead them right.  Be careful and not turn away the small still voice; it will teach you what to do and where to go; it will yield the fruits of the kingdom.  Tell the brethren to keep their hearts open to conviction, so that the Holy Ghost comes to them, their hearts will be ready to receive it."

President Benson was sure to make it very clear this was not just a message to the Brethren and leaders of the Church, this was a message to all.

As we are taught "the most important thing in our lives is the Spirit",
... do you feel it in your lives Sisters?

We can know by the way we feel..."The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance" Galatians 5:22-23

"When you DO good, you FEEL good, and that is the Holy Ghost speaking to you.  The Holy Ghost is a wonderful companion.  He is ALWAYS there to help you."

"Seek the spirit in all you do.  Keep it with you continually.  That is our challenge"

"The Holy Ghost causes our feelings to be more tender.  We feel more charitable and compassionate with each other.  We are more calm in our relationships.  We have a greater capacity to love each other.  People want us to be around us because our very countenances radiate the influence of the Spirit.  We are more godly in our character.  As a result, we become increasingly more sensitive to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and thus able to comprehend spiritual things more clearly."

President Benson counsels three ways to ensure the Spirit is part of our lives.

1. Sincere Prayer & Fasting
2. Daily Scripture Study
3. Obedience to God's Laws

We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet

Today's lesson is taken from The Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, Chapter 11: Follow the Living Prophet which you can read HERE.

From a tiny child President Benson learned from his father that when "the Presidency has spoken, this is the word of the Lord to us!" and to always obey.  It was a lesson he went on to teach his own children and in turn the members of the Church.

He taught: "Learn to keep your eye on the prophet.  He is the Lord's mouthpiece and the only man who can speak for the Lord today.  Let his inspired counsel take precedence."

President Benson taught: " The most important prophet, so far as we are concerned, is the one who is living in our day and age.  This is the prophet who has today's instructions from God to us.  God's revelation to Adam did not instruct Noah how to build the ark.  Every generation has need of the ancient scripture, plus the current scripture from the living prophet.  Therefore, the most crucial reading and pondering that you should do is of the latest inspired words from the Lord's mouthpiece."

Can you remember what President Monson, our living prophet, has taught recently?

If not, maybe now is the time to take a few moments and relook at his recent counsel.

"If you want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain - how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord's anointed - the living Prophet - President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency."

"The story is told how Brigham Young, driving through a community, saw a man building a house and simply told him to double the thickness of his walls.  Accepting President Young as a prophet, the man changed his plans and doubled the walls.  Shortly afterwards a flood came through that town, resulting in much destruction, but this man's walls stood.  While putting the roof on his house, he was heard singing, 'We thank thee, O God for a prophet!'"

May we too follow the prophet and bring such blessings on our own families.

Smiles :)

Sisters, wasn't Stake Conference just amazing today!!!

We hope the messages we heard have touched your heart and will make a difference to both you and your families over coming weeks.

As you discuss Elder Holland's powerful testimony and teaching of the Book of Mormon with your family you may wish to review this video, where he shares his feelings (taken from his General Conference talk in October 2009):

Also, a little update on Big Hearts, our Stake RS Service Project.  At Women's Day we collected 88 strips which have been sent off to be made into blankets.  Along with the strips we have donated 5 boxes of other donations of knitted items and hygiene items to Rachel's Place in South Africa and the Kenya Children's Centre as well as a full box of angel baby items which are being sent to Preemies UK.

Just look at the smiles on these beautiful little faces when they receive a little teddy bear: it makes our hard work all worth the effort!!!

Being Genuine....

Todays lesson was based on President Uchtdorf's talk in the Priesthood Session from General Conference in April 2015: On Being Genuine.  You can watch / read the talk HERE

Have you heard of a Potemkin Village?

"In the late 18th Century, Catherine the Great of Russia announced she would tour the southern part of her empire, accompanied by several foreign ambassadors.  The governor of the area, Grigory Potemkin, desperately wanted to impress these visitors, and so he went to remarkable lengths to showcase the country's accomplishments.

"For part of the journey, Catherine floated down the Dnieper River, proudly pointing out to the ambassadors the thriving hamlets along the shore, filled with industrious and happy townspeople.  There was only one problem: it was all for show! It is said that Potemkin had assembled pasteboard facades of shops and homes...Once the party disappeared around the bend of the river, Potemkin's men packed up the fake village and rushed it downstream in preparation for Catherine's next pass."

Is it possible that at times we are more concerned with how we appear to others than what is really in our hearts?

"There is nothing wrong with shining our shoes, smelling our best or even hiding the dirty dishes before the home teachers arrive!  However, when taken to extremes, this desire to impress can shift from useful to deceitful"

President Uchtdorf gave us good news however which can give us a great deal of hope:

"Whether your testimony is thriving and healthy or your activity in the Church more closely
resembles a Potemkin village, the good news is that you can build on whatever strength you have.  Here in the Church of Jesus Christ you can mature spiritually and draw closer to the Saviour by applying gospel principles day by day.

"With patience and persistence, even the smallest act of discipleship or the tiniest ember of belief can become a blazing bonfire of a consecrated life.  In fact, that's how most bonfires begin - as a simple spark."

Isn't that wonderful?  The Lord will accept us as we are now, with whatever we can give.  But, we can be assured that if we are not yet the Sister in the Gospel we want to be, then there is a way, there is hope - we can be all the Lord needs us to be - we just have to try and allow the Saviour to   help us !

Sisters - none of us are perfect and we don't have to try to be !!!   The Church is a place of healing, not hiding!!

"The church is not an automobile showroom - a place to put ourselves on display so that others can admire our spirituality, capacity or prosperity.  It is more like a service centre, where vehicles in need of repair come for maintenance and rehabilitation.  And are not ALL of us in need of maintenance and rehabilitation?"

We just have to be willing to accept the Atonement each day of our lives, have patience and persistently live the gospel.  "Christ has the power to breathe life unto you" - will you let Him?

Sisters, you are amazing !!!

Thank you so much for your participation and support at Women's Day yesterday.  It was a lovely chance to be with the Sisters of the Ipswich Stake, and you are amazing.

We hope that the talks you heard and the classes you attended touched your heart and have helped to determine how to better anchor YOUR faith in Jesus Christ, wherein lies true happiness and safety.

We were also thrilled with the wonderful donations for our Big Hearts Service Project, boxes and boxes full of items are boxed and ready to post.

As we explained yesterday this project will continue throughout 2015 so please keep creating and donating, each item will touch a life for the better.

We have a wonderful batch of items which will be sent to Preemies UK - many women each year suffer the loss of babies to stillbirth or miscarriage and the hospital are not able to provide burial clothes.  We can help by providing burial clothes, tiny blankets to wrap the babies up snugly and little teddies which need to be made in pairs, one will be buried with the baby and one given to the parents.

Sister Claire Chell in the Colchester ward loves to sew and made some beautiful burial gowns from her own wedding dress.  She would like to make more so if any sister has any wedding dresses, old temple dresses or pretty white / cream material please let us know so we can pass this over.  She is also willing to assist any other sisters who would prefer to sew and can help you with patterns etc.  Please contact Claire directly or let Sara McCullum know if you are interested.

The other items donated will all be sent to either the Kenya Childrens Centre and Maternity Hospital or Rachel's Place, an orphanage in Lesotho, South Africa - wherever the need is the greatest.

We read a message to the sisters at Women's Day yesterday from Val and Davy who set up Rachel's Place, we have included a copy below:

Our name is Davy and Val Bailey.  We were in Lesotho, South Africa for the first time in March 2007 on an outreach project with our church.  A young guy came up to us and said that God has given him a vision of us at the bottom of a mountain helping people.  We thought it was kind but we didn’t think any more about it.  We then went on another outreach in September 2007 and Davy felt God telling him he had to help the children.  We didn’t say anything to anyone and began to pray about it for the next 6 months.  We received a confirmation that God wanted us to step out in faith to help, after 3 more confirmations we did – and began to build an orphanage and crèche.
We started to fundraise for the building and true to His word we got everything we need. I also run a baby pack project which was the first project we began there. We have had so much help from the people that knit and sew for us that we are able to hold a container for when we need any clothes or items for the children.  The items you send will help refill that container.  It not only helps the children in Rachel s place but also the children in the other villages and the children in South Africa.
We are very careful with who we leave the clothes with, as a lot of clothes that are sent out to Africa get sold to the people rather than just given to them.  We can assure you that everything we receive from you will find a good home at no cost to the needy. We currently have 33 children in Rachel’s Place, and have just built a new church and youth room as well as a new bedroom for the girls .The boys have moved into the old church which was a part of Rachel Place. It means we now have room for more children. The children that come to us come though social workers. These are children whose parents have died, some who have been abused, and we have 4 families - it’s always nice when we can keep the children as a family.
Aids is very high in Lesotho and we have 3 children with full blown Aids ,this means they have to take anti-viral drugs to keep them alive. We also provide them with the very best vitamins we can get.  They are all doing really well but it only takes one wrong bug and they can be gone.
The importance of getting clothes sent here is that we don’t have to buy them so this means we can use our money on things like the vitamins the children need to stay alive, We can’t thank you all enough for what you all do.  You are all a part of Rachel’s Place and Amy’s Crèche by donating the way you all do.

Just last week a wee guy come to the door to get a sweet.  He had a pair of wellies on, one was a size 4 and the other a size 6 - both were ripped to bits. We had a pair of red wellies that someone has given us for the container.  We gave him the wellies and he was so happy. The wellies didn’t change what goes on in the world but it made one child very happy and he will have dry warm feet for a while.

So keep knitting ladies that one wee hat or that one wee blanket does make a difference.  Thank you all so much for allowing yourselves to be a part of Gods plan.

Sisters - thank you so much for the good you do!

The Power of the Word....

Today's lesson was from Chapter 8 of the Teachings of President Ezra Taft Benson...

At a priesthood leadership meeting Pres. Benson gave a partial address but wanted to ensure all members could receive his counsel.  The lesson today was the entire address - please take a few moments to read it HERE.

A few highlights from Pres. Benson's address are shown below:

"Satan is waging war against the members of the Church who have testimonies and are trying to keep the commandments.  And while many of our members are remaining faithful and strong, some are wavering.  Some are falling...The Prophet Lehi saw our day.  He saw that many people would wander blindly in the mists of darkness...he saw some fall away in forbidden paths...and still others wander in strange roads.  Some members of the Church today are among those souls Lehi saw which were lost."

But that does not have to happen to us!

"Lehi saw an iron rod which led through the mists of darkness.  He saw that IF people would hold fast to that rod, they could avoid the rivers of filthiness, stay away from the forbidden paths, stop from wandering in the strange roads that lead to destruction."

That iron rod is the word of God...as found in the scriptures, in the words of the living prophets, and in personal revelation.  "This is the answer to the great challenge of our time."

What part does the word of God play in your life?

"Often we spend great effort in trying to increase the activity levels in our stakes.  We work diligently to raise the percentages of those attending sacrament meetings.  We labour to get higher percentage of our young men on missions.  We strive to improve the numbers of those marrying in the temple.  All of these are commendable efforts and important to the growth of the kingdom.  But when individual members and families immerse themselves in the scriptures regularly and consistently, these other areas of activity will automatically come.  Testimonies will increase.  Commitment will be stretched.  Families will be fortified.  Personal revelation will flow."

"Success in righteousness, the power to avoid deception and resist temptation, guidance in our daily lives, healing of the soul - these are but a few of the promises the Lord has given to those who will come to His word.....

"However diligent we may be in other areas, certain blessings are to be found only in the scriptures, only in coming to the word of the Lord and holding fast to it as we make our way through the mists of darkness to the tree of life."

Do you love the scriptures and the Word of God?  President Benson pleads with us:

"I urge you to recommit yourselves to a study of the scriptures.  Immerse yourself in them daily."

Joseph Smith, an Instrument in the Hands of the Lord

Todays lesson was taken from The Teachings of President Ezra Taft Benson, Chapter 7.

During President Benson's mission in Northern England he was invited to speak to a group of investigator's at the local chapel.  He decided to speak about the apostasy and prepared a 15 minute talk.  He said: "When I sat down and looked at my watch, I had talked 25 minutes and I hadn't mentioned the apostasy, I hadn't even thought of the apostasy.  I had talked about Joseph Smith and I had borne witness that he was a prophet of God and I knew it.  I told about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon as a new witness of Christ and I had borne testimony.  When I realized what had happened, I couldn't hold back the tears.

Take a moment to watch this short, but wonderful video on Joseph Smith and note what the Spirit whispers to you about this great man:

We have much to be grateful to Joseph Smith for.

1. The First Vision - "it is a message and a revelation intended for all of our Father's children living upon the face of the earth.  It was the greatest event that has ever happened in this world since the resurrection of the Master. Sometimes I think we are so close to it that we don't fully appreciate it's significance and importance and the magnitude of it."

2. The bringing forth of the Book of Mormon - "the major purpose of the record is to convince a later generation that Jesus if the Christ, the Son of God...If the Book of Mormon is true, then Jesus is the Christ, Joseph Smith was His prophet, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true and it is being led today by a prophet receiving revelation."

3. God established the Kingdom on earth through Joseph Smith

President Benson testified of Joseph Smith: "His mission had had, and was to have, impact on all who had come to earth, all who then dwelt on earth and the millions yet unborn.  I testify to you that Joseph Smith was and is a prophet of God, one of the truly great prophets of all time, a man of destiny, a man of character, a man of courage, a man of deep spirituality, a God-like prophet of the Lord, a truly noble and great one of all time."

Joseph Smith

Today in RS we had a ward choice for Teachings of Our Times - one of our wards studied Elder Neil L. Anderson's talk 'Joseph Smith'.

Jesus Christ chose a holy man, a righteous man, to lead the Restoration of the fullness of His gospel.
He chose Joseph Smith.

'Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration.  His spiritual work began with the appearance of the Father and the Son, followed by numerous heavenly visitations.  He was the instrument in God's hands in bringing forth sacred scripture, lost doctrine, and the restoration of the priesthood.  The importance of Joseph's work requires more than intellectual consideration, it requires that we, like Joseph, ask of God.  Spiritual questions deserve spiritual answers from God.'

Elder Anderson warned that in the world there is an increasing dismissal of the Lord and in turn of Joseph Smith and the Restoration - 'we are especially saddened when someone who once revered Joseph retreats from his or her conviction and then maligns the Prophet.'

So what can we as sisters in the gospel do, to ensure our own testimonies remain strong and how should we react to those who do not believe.

'To questions about Joseph's character, we might share the words of thousands who knew him personally and who gave their lives for the work he helped to establish.....We might remind the sincere inquirer that Internet information does not have a "truth" filter.  Some information, no matter how convincing, is simply not true.

'Years ago I read a Time Magazine article that reported the discovery of a letter, supposedly written by Martin Harris, that conflicted with Joseph Smith's account of finding the Book of Mormon plates.  A few members left the church because of the document.  Sadly, they left too quickly.  Months later experts discovered (and the forger confessed) that the letter was a complete deception.  You may understandably question what you hear on the news, but you need never doubt the testimony of God's prophets.'

'Each believer needs a spiritual confirmation of the divine mission and character of the Prophet Joseph Smith.  This is true for every generation....Brothers and Sisters, let me give you a caution: you won't be of much help to others if your own faith is not securely in place.'

A few weeks ago I boarded a plane for South America.  The flight attendant directed our attention to a safety video.  It is unlikely, we were warned, but if cabin pressure changes, the panels above your seat will open, revealing oxygen masks.  If this happens, reach up and pull a mask toward you.

Place the mask over your nose and mouth.  Slip the elastic strap over your head and adjust the mask if necessary.

Then this caution:

Be sure to adjust your own mask before helping others.'

'The negative commentary about the Prophet Joseph Smith will increase as we move toward the Second Coming of Jesus Christ....There will be family members and friends who will need your help.  Now is the time to adjust your own spiritual oxygen mask so that you are prepared to help others who are seeking the truth.'

Jesus Christ - Our Saviour and Redeemer

Today's lesson was taken from Chapter 6 of The Teachings of President Ezra Taft Benson: Jesus Christ, Our Saviour and Redeemer.

A most priceless blessing available to every member of the Church is a testimony of the divinity of Jesus Christ and His Church.  A testimony is one of the few possessions we may take with us when we leave this life.

To have a testimony of Jesus is to possess knowledge through the Holy Ghost of the divine mission of Jesus Christ.

A testimony of Jesus is to know the divine nature of our Lord's birth - that He is indeed the Only Begotten Son in the flesh.

A testimony of Jesus is to know that He was the promised Messiah and that while he sojourned among men that He accomplished many mighty miracles.

A testimony of Jesus is to know that the laws which He prescribed as His doctrine are true and then to abide by these laws and ordinances.

To possess a testimony of Jesus is to know that He voluntarily took upon Himself the sins of all mankind in the Garden of Gethsemane, which cause Him to suffer in both body and spirit and to bleed from every pore.  All this he did so that we would not have to suffer if we would repent.

To possess a testimony of Jesus is to know that He came forth triumphantly from the grave with a physical, resurrected body.  And because He lives, so shall all mankind.

To possess a testimony of Jesus is to know that God the Father and Jesus Christ did indeed appear to the Prophet Joseph Smith to establish a new dispensation of His gospel so that salvation may be preached to all nations before He comes.

To possess a testimony of Jesus is to know that God the Father and Jesus Christ did indeed appear to the Prophet Joseph Smith to establish a new dispensation of
His gospel so that salvation may be preached to all nations before He comes.

To possess a testimony of Jesus is to know that the Church, which He established in the meridian of time and restored in modern times is, as the Lord has declared, the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth.

Having such a testimony is vital, but of even greater importance is being valiant to that testimony.

A testimony of Jesus means we that we accept the divine mission of Jesus Christ, embrace His gospel, and do His work.

" We need more men and women of Christ who will always remember Him, who will keep His commandments which He has given them.  The greatest yardstick of success is to see how closely we can walk each moment in His steps."

Great Work !!

Look at these wonderful items sisters have been making towards our Service project:

Beautiful Angel Baby Burial Gown - made by Sister Claire Chell in Colchester from the precious fabric from her wedding dress.

An abundance of crocheted squares to be made into blankets - all made by Sister Cherie Hart in Tendring

Beautifully made hygiene bags, made by Sister Kim Spencer in Ipswich Ward

A variety of blanket strips made by various Sisters from the Stake

Don't forget every little bit helps, if you can donate a toothbrush or a bar of soap or knit a 6inch square, it will improve the life of one of these African mothers and children, and assist the parents of the tiny angel and premature babies.

Thank you for the wonderful enthusiasm you have given to our service project
